Inside our Amazon box was a prepaid envelope for "Cell Phones for Soldiers" It's a cell phone recycling program to help the soldiers call home. But not with your donated phones exactly -- The program sells the phones to raise money for phone cards to send to the troops. It is legit, though. And if you have a few abandoned cell phones taking up space in your junk drawer, it's a good way to get rid of them and do something nice. Recellular is a good site with specific directions for your brand and model on how to erase numbers and other personal information from your phone before sending to this or any other donation/recycling organization.
